You’re Strong. So Why Do You Still Feel Unstable?

You exercise. You lift weights. You run, hike, bike, play sports, or stay active in some way. You may even consider yourself strong.
So why does your body sometimes feel like it is not quite holding together?
Maybe one side feels different from the other. Maybe a joint occasionally feels like it might give out. Maybe you feel loose through your center, disconnected from your movement, or unable to find the muscle you know is supposed to be working. Or maybe you don’t know which muscle is supposed to be working.
Or maybe you are strong enough to do the movement, but something about it just does not feel solid or right.
It is easy to assume that the answer is more strength.
Sometimes it is.
But strength and stability are not the same thing.
Strength is your ability to produce force. Stability is your ability to organize and control that force while your body is moving.
You can be very strong and still have difficulty creating that connection.
When the body is not coordinating efficiently, it does not simply stop working. It finds another way.
A joint may begin taking more of the load. A larger muscle may take over for a smaller stabilizing muscle. One side may begin doing more work than the other. Your body may shift, rotate, brace, or tighten in subtle ways to create the support it is missing.
You can still complete the movement.
You may even complete it well enough that no one notices anything is unstable.
But underneath the movement, the body may be working much harder than it needs to.
This is one of the reasons I often hear people say, “I know I am strong, but I just don’t feel stable.”
They may be able to squat, but they do not feel connected to their feet.
They may be able to lift, but they cannot feel their core supporting the movement.
They may be able to balance, but they are constantly making small corrections to keep themselves upright.
They may be able to run for miles, but one hip, knee, or foot always seems to become the problem.
They may be able to perform an exercise correctly when someone tells them exactly what to do, but the moment the cue is removed, their body returns to the pattern it knows best.
That does not necessarily mean they need to get stronger.
It may mean their body has not learned how to effectively use the strength it already has.
This is where coordination becomes important.
Your muscles do not work independently. Your body is constantly communicating about where you are in space, where your joints are positioned, how much force is being produced, and which muscles need to contribute next.
When those systems are not communicating effectively, the body begins creating workarounds.
Sometimes the imbalance is muscular. Sometimes it is related to mobility or stability. Sometimes there is a structural difference that needs to be considered. Sometimes a person simply has never learned how to engage or connect with a particular part of their body during movement.
And sometimes it is a combination of several of these.
I see this in people who look strong from the outside but have difficulty finding their foundation.
And one of the interesting things about compensation is that we often do not realize it is happening.
We grow and age with our bodies. As our bodies change, small imbalances can develop gradually—a shift in how we stand, a change in how we distribute weight, a muscle that is no longer contributing as efficiently, or a joint that begins to move a little differently.
Because the change happens alongside us, we often adapt without realizing we are adapting.
The body finds another way to create stability. We use it. We keep moving.
And eventually, that new strategy can become so familiar that it simply feels normal. It becomes our new movement habit.
This is why I want to know which muscle is not contributing effectively. I consider what is supposed to be working, what is actually working, and what is taking over in its place.
But that is only part of the picture.
I also want to know: How is your body organizing this movement?
Because the answer is not always about strength.
Sometimes the muscle is strong.
You just cannot access it at the right time.
Sometimes the range of motion is there.
You just cannot control it.
Sometimes you have excellent balance.
You just do not have the stability to maintain that balance without constantly compensating.
And sometimes the body is asking one area to do a job that was meant to be shared by several.
When I watch someone move, I am looking for these relationships.
I am looking at how the feet connect to the ground, how the hips support the pelvis, how the rib cage and pelvis relate to one another, how the core contributes, how the shoulders move, and whether the body is able to transfer force from one area to another without losing its connection along the way.
I am watching for the little quirks.
The shift that happens every time you squat.
The knee that moves differently on one side.
The shoulder that takes over when you reach overhead.
The foot that loses contact with the ground.
The breath that changes when a movement becomes difficult.
The muscle you cannot feel until someone helps you find it.
These details matter because movement is a system.
When one part of the system is not contributing effectively, something else usually has to pick up the work.
That compensation may allow you to continue moving for years.
But efficient movement is not simply about being able to complete a task.
It is about how your body gets there.
You do not necessarily need more strength.
You may need better access to the strength you already have.
You may need to reconnect with a part of your body that has been underutilized. You may need to improve your ability to control the range of motion you already have. You may need to slow down enough to let your nervous system recognize a different movement strategy.
And sometimes, the most important change is simply learning what your body is actually doing.
Because once you can feel the difference between hanging on a joint and being supported by your muscles, between forcing a movement and controlling it, or between simply completing an exercise and actually connecting through it, movement begins to feel different.
You stop asking, “How much can I do?”
And you start asking, “How well can my body do this?”
That shift is important.
The goal is not simply to become stronger.
It is to build a body that knows how to use its strength, coordinate its movement, and support you from the inside out.
Because being strong is valuable.
But being strong, connected, and supported is what allows that strength to work for you.
And sometimes, the first step toward feeling more stable is not doing more.
It is learning how your body is moving in the first place.
That is where the real work begins.
Your Body Is Always Talking. Most People Have Never Learned How to Listen.

One of the greatest misconceptions surrounding pain, movement, and physical performance is the belief that discomfort simply happens. We are often conditioned to view tightness, recurring pain, instability, or fatigue as isolated problems that require isolated solutions. Stretch the tight muscle. Strengthen the weak area. Rest when something hurts. Push through when movement feels difficult.
What many people have never been taught is that the body is constantly communicating, and these symptoms are rarely random.
More often, what we experience physically is the result of the body responding to demand in the only way it currently knows how. Tightness, recurring fatigue, discomfort, instability, and even the subtle sense that your body simply does not feel quite right are often signs that movement is being managed inefficiently beneath the surface.
The human body is remarkably intelligent. When one area is unable to contribute effectively, the body does not simply stop functioning. Instead, it begins creating alternative strategies. Muscles begin working harder than they were designed to. Joints begin absorbing force they were never meant to manage repeatedly. Movement patterns gradually shift in ways that allow us to continue functioning, even when the underlying mechanics have quietly changed.
The problem is that adaptation and efficiency are not always the same thing.
Over time, these protective strategies become deeply ingrained compensation patterns. The body continues moving, often appearing functional from the outside, while underneath it may be operating with decreasing stability, coordination, and resilience.
I see this across every population I work with. I see it in athletes who continue training at a high level while quietly accumulating repetitive injuries. I see it in active adults who exercise consistently but continue experiencing tension or fatigue that never fully resolves. I see it in parents who have spent years prioritizing everyone around them and gradually lose confidence in what their own body is capable of doing. I see it in older adults who begin feeling unstable and assume aging itself is responsible, when often the body has simply spent years relying on inefficient movement strategies.
Perhaps most importantly, people often believe their body is somehow working against them.
In reality, the body is usually doing exactly what it has learned to do in order to protect itself.
The question is whether those patterns are still serving you.
This understanding is the foundation of why I focus so heavily on movement reprogramming. Sometimes the answer is not more stretching. Sometimes it is not pushing harder in the gym or adding another exercise routine. Sometimes the real solution lies in understanding how the body has learned to compensate over time, identifying where load is being distributed inefficiently, and helping the nervous system restore more effective movement patterns.
When the body begins moving with better coordination, improved stability, and greater efficiency, movement stops feeling like something you constantly have to fight against.
The goal is not simply to move more.
The goal is to create a body capable of supporting the life you want to live for years to come.
Your body has been communicating with you for a long time.
The question is whether you have learned how to listen.

The Invisible Blueprint: Why Moving More Isn’t Always Moving Better

“I have no idea how you are standing.”
Those were the words that my Physical Therapist said to me in 2022.
At the time, I was an Occupational Therapist with years of clinical experience. I looked fit and healthy from the outside, but underneath that, my body was compensating constantly. To an expert eye, my body was essentially a collection of parts moving without a proper foundation.
If you’ve ever felt like your body was deceiving you—looking strong on the outside while feeling unstable, fatigued or disconnected underneath, you are not alone. My journey toward being Built For Life didn’t start with a traditional gym program. It started with a 39-year investigation into why my own body felt like it was operating in survival mode.
Growing up as an athlete, I followed the standard industry routines: the same static stretches and rapid warmups as everyone else. However, typical athletic programs are often developed around the idea that everyone has a mechanically sound body.
For those with hypermobility, connective tissue laxity, chronic compensation patterns, or poor joint stability, pushing through often creates deeper compensation rather than better movement.
By 2022, I realized my top and bottom halves were moving without a clear, efficient connection. I felt loose through my center and disconnected from my own foundation. I assumed everyone’s body instinctively knew what to do, but movement mechanics tell a different story.
For many people, the deeper stabilizing system is not contributing efficiently. The Transverse Abdominis, ankle stabilizers, hips, and other foundational support systems may not be coordinating well. Without that internal support, the body begins to hang on its joints rather than being supported by its muscles.
Over time, overactive muscles take over to keep the body upright while primary movers remain underutilized. Movement becomes a chore of survival rather than an expression of strength.
This compensation can show up as:
- Recurring tightness
- Stiffness
- Fatigue
- Instability
- Recurring injuries
- Feeling “off” despite staying active
Even with professional expertise, the “push through” mentality is a difficult trap to escape. In 2025, seven miles into an 11-mile run, I felt a distinct twinge in my knee. I ignored it, falling back into the societal myth that pain is merely a mindset that should be overcome and that “more” is always better. I finished the run, moving my body as if stability were a given and ignoring my specific needs in favor of the ‘more is better’ myth. I paid for it with a reinjury.
That experience reinforced something I now discuss often with clients: movement is not simply about mindset or effort. Mechanics matter.
This is why I focus heavily on movement reprogramming and foundational control.
True stability is not found in a generic stretch or a cookie-cutter exercise program. It is found in understanding your specific blueprint and helping the body redistribute load more effectively.
For some people, that starts with improving foot and ankle mobility. For others, it means reconnecting with the deep core, improving breathing mechanics, restoring hip control, or helping the brain recognize which muscles should be working and which muscles are compensating.
If you cannot feel the muscle, you cannot effectively train the muscle.
These changes are rarely dramatic overnight fixes. More often, they are subtle, intentional, and progressive. But when the body begins sharing load more efficiently, movement becomes more stable, sustainable, and resilient.
In 2022, my body was built for survival.
Today, I am still doing the daily work of retraining and reprogramming. That process is the foundation of what I now help clients work through every day as a Movement Reprogramming Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer, and Occupational Therapist.

Why Your Low Back Feels Fine During Activity but Tired After

If your low back is something you notice more after activity, whether that is exercise, housework, yard work, or simply a full day, you are not alone.
This is one of the most common patterns I see. People are doing all the “right” things. They are stretching, strengthening, and staying active, yet their low back still feels like it cannot keep up.
It is common to assume the answer is more stretching or trying to strengthen the back.
In many cases, that is not actually the issue.
Low back fatigue is often less about the back being weak, and more about it doing more work than it is meant to.
When other areas, such as the hips, glutes, or core, are not contributing effectively, the low back will often compensate. Over time, that can show up as tightness, stiffness, or fatigue, especially after activity rather than during it.
Stretching can sometimes provide temporary relief. However, when the feeling keeps returning, it is often a sign that the underlying pattern has not changed.
Common patterns I see include limited control and or mobility through the hips, glutes that are not contributing effectively, and a lack of support from the deeper core.
Breathing can also play a role. When the ribs are not moving well, or the breath stays more in the chest, the core is not able to support the body as effectively. This can lead to the low back picking up more of the work than it should.
When these pieces are not working together, the low back tends to take on more load than its share.
This is not about eliminating stretching or avoiding strength work. It is about understanding what your body actually needs and restoring balance so that no one area is doing everything.
For many people, that means slowing things down, improving control, and reconnecting to how the hips and core support movement.
This is something I wish I had understood earlier in my own experience with low back discomfort, and it is something I now help clients work through every day.
